Diversity-the state of being diverse; variety.
Inclusion-the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure.
Service-the action of helping or doing work for someone.
As a part of our LAS protocol, every LAS student is required to join what is called a LEAD Team. LEAD Teams are designed to create unity between the different LAS classes, as well as get involved in the surrounding campus and community. There are a variety of different teams that one can join; Special Olympics, Competition Day, Special Events, and a variety of others. The one that I joined is called Diversity, Inclusion, and Service (or DIS, we we like to call it).
Our LEAD Team was responsible for promoting, well, diversity, inclusion and service. We found various service projects throughout the city (like the Isabella County Rotating Homeless Shelter) and volunteered with them. We also found various diversity-related events throughout campus and promoted them to others. One of the events that we planned during the year was a LAS-MAC tailgate. This tailgate, put on before one of the Tuesday football games, was meant to bring together both the LAS and MAC scholar cohorts.
To be honest, I really liked the idea behind this LEAD team. The idea of bringing awareness of issues to others, creating unity with people, and serving your community really appealed to me. I got a sense of that from this team- we look at the surface of some of these issues, but not as much as I would have liked. I wanted to do more.
I felt like there was so much underutilized potential with this group that I decided to do more. I wanted to bring more awareness to diversity, inclusion, and service related events and activities around campus. It made me realize that there were a lot of people that were not aware of these issues, and it takes a great leader to bring awareness to these issues. I recently applied (an attained the position of) LEAD Team chair for this team for the upcoming school year. I am looking forward to working with my fellow Co-Chairs to promote these issues together for the betterment of our community.
